Amazon.co.uk receives orders for 2 million items on its busiest day in 2009 – Monday 7th December

December 26, 2009:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the biggest selling pre-order video game of all time on Amazon.co.uk, is the best selling Christmas product of 2009. The must-have video game is closely followed by funny man of the moment Michael McIntyre with his ‘Live 2009’ DVD and another favourite Brit, Harry Potter, secures third place on the Amazon.co.uk top ten best sellers of Christmas 2009 with ‘Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince’ on DVD.

Perhaps a surprise entry into the top ten best sellers for Christmas is Rage Against the Machine’s single ‘Killing In The Name’ which saw incredible MP3 sales on Amazon.co.uk during the race for the Christmas number one.

"Who would have thought, even four weeks ago, that Rage Against The Machine would be responsible for one of the best-selling products of Christmas 2009 with greater sales than the likes of Dan Brown, Stephenie Meyer, Robbie Williams and Michael Bublé," said Brian McBride, managing director of Amazon.co.uk Ltd. "Their MP3 sales have been incredible and the only music artist to better them this Christmas has been Susan Boyle, whose debut album has broken records on Amazon and continues to grow in popularity."

"For the first time ever, the best selling Christmas product is a video game illustrating their continued increasing popularity in the UK. Call of Duty 2 has been the number one bestseller on Amazon.co.uk throughout the festive season having already achieved the status of the most pre-ordered video game in Amazon.co.uk’s history."

Amazon.co.uk received orders for 2 million items on its busiest day in the run up to Christmas (Monday 7th December) this year – a rate of around 23 items ordered per second. At its peak, Amazon.co.uk shipped over 1.2 million units in one 24-hour period, which represents about 642 tonnes of goods and means that on average a delivery truck was leaving an Amazon distribution centre once every 4 minutes and 19 seconds.
