Amazon.co.uk brings Boxing Day sale forward to start on Christmas Day for a second year running due to customer demand

Luxembourg – 23 December 2013 –Amazon.co.uk has announced that it is expecting its busiest Christmas Day yet, having seen sales on 25th December grow by more than fivefold over the past five years. Orders are expected to peak at 8.32pm as customers start their sales shopping in front of the Christmas Day TV specials.

Here are some of the trends that Amazon.co.uk has historically seen on Christmas Day:

10am: Eleventh hour shopping
Gift Card sales peak at 10am on Christmas Day as people log on to pick up last minute presents.

12noon: Digital downloads
With the first presents opened and an hour or so before lunch, shoppers head to Amazon.co.uk to purchase Kindle books and MP3 products for their new devices. Redemption of Gift Cards also increases at this time.

3pm: The Queen’s speech
Sales dip around 3pm in time for The Queen’s speech, as the nation stops what they are doing to watch the monarch give her traditional televised address.

7pm onwards: Christmas TV specials
Last year, the Downton Abbey Christmas Special was televised at 8.45pm on 25th December, prompting sales of the DVD, Downton Abbey: A Journey to the Highlands, to soar between 9pm and midnight.

8.30pm: Sofa surfing
Christmas Day sales on Amazon.co.uk traditionally peak at around 8.30pm, as customers relax after the day’s festivities and get an early start on their sales shopping. Amazon.co.uk saw sales peak at 8.32pm on Christmas Day 2012, as Brits began to bag their Boxing Day Deals Week bargains from the comfort of their sofa.

“The trends that emerge during the course of day give us a fascinating insight into how the nation spends Christmas Day,” said Xavier Garambois, Vice President of EU Retail at Amazon. “The increased availability of home broadband and growth in shopping on tablets and smartphones means that it’s more convenient than ever to pick up a last minute Gift Card or a bargain in the sales.”
