Amazon to create more than 300 new permanent jobs with the opening of a second fulfilment centre in Doncaster

02/09/2015

London – 2nd September 2015 – Amazon has today announced that it will open its tenth fulfilment centre in the UK later this year. The new 250,000 sq ft fulfilment centre will begin fulfilling customer orders in autumn 2015 and will create in excess of 300 new permanent jobs in the next three years.

“Our existing Doncaster team has done an exceptional job of delivering a first rate level of service for our customers and we are delighted to open another site which will further draw upon the strong pool of talent in the area,“ said John Tagawa, Vice President of Operations, Amazon UK. “We will continue to create new sites, more jobs and provide a wide range of benefits for our employees.”

Recruitment for the Doncaster fulfilment centre will be via local recruitment agencies with roles also listed on the Amazon careers website http://www.amazon.jobs/location/doncaster-england. As well as a competitive base rate of pay all permanent associates benefit from:

  • Stock grants after one year’s service and over the last five years this has been equal to £1,000 or more per year per associate.
  • Private medical insurance, a company pension plan, life assurance, income protection and an employee discount.
  • Career Choice – the innovative education programme that pre-pays 95% of tuition and associated fees for permanent employees to undertake nationally recognised courses.
  • Four ten-hour shifts per week which mean associates benefit from three days off every week. Fewer visits to work saves both time and money on a weekly basis.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “This excellent news emphasises that Doncaster is open for business, and I am delighted that so many jobs have been created. Amazon’s decision to open this centre in Doncaster shows our strength as a logistics hub, and emphasises how much our economy is growing.”

Amazon continues to offer customers more and more ways to receive their orders including collection from more than 13,000 Amazon Pickup Locations, ranging from Amazon Lockers to Post Office branches and convenience stores. Amazon Prime members receive unlimited One-Day Delivery on millions of items seven days a week as one of the many benefits of Prime.

Recently, Amazon launched Prime Now, an ultra-fast service, available for Prime members in London and Birmingham which offers one-hour delivery on thousands of items including daily essentials such as coffee, batteries and nappies, as well as other popular items like games consoles, toys and sports equipment, through a mobile app.

“We know that our customers are looking for great low prices on an ever-increasing selection of products with fast delivery,” continued John Tagawa. “Our ever-expanding network of fulfilment centres and delivery stations across the UK means that every customer in the UK can benefit from delivery of millions of products at a speed and to a location that works best for them.”

Amazon already has eight fulfilment centres in UK, which are located in Doncaster, Dunfermline, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Marston Gate, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay. Together, more than 7,000 permanent employees work at these centres. Amazon recently announced its ninth fulfilment centre is due to open in Dunstable in the autumn 2015.

The new site in Doncaster is located on Water Vole Way, a short distance from Amazon’s existing site on Balby Carr Bank which opened in 2010.
