Bristol fulfilment centre will be equipped with advanced Amazon Robotics technology
LONDON - 16th August 2017 - Amazon today announced plans to open a new fulfilment centre in Bristol in 2018, creating more than 1,000 new permanent jobs in the local area. Recruitment will begin next year for a range of new roles, including operations managers, engineers, HR and IT specialists.
“We are very excited to expand our network into Bristol, which will in total create more than 1,000 new permanent roles with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one,” said Stefano Perego, Amazon’s Director of UK Customer Fulfilment. “There are several factors we consider when deciding on where to place a new fulfilment centre, and Bristol offers fantastic infrastructure and talented local people who we look forward to joining the Amazon team.”
All permanent Amazon fulfilment centre employees start on £7.65 an hour or more. This increases over their first two years of employment when all employees earn £8.15 an hour or more. In addition, all permanent employees working in the company’s fulfilment centres receive stock grants, which over the last five years were equal to £1,000 or more per year per employee. Employees are offered a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, subsidised meals and an employee discount, which combined are worth more than £700 annually, as well as a company pension plan.
Amazon also offers employees an innovative programme called Career Choice that provides employees funding for adult education, offering to pre-pay 95% of tuition and associated fees for nationally recognised courses, up to £8,000 over four years.
It is fantastic news that Amazon is opening a new fulfilment centre in Severn Beach,” said Jack Lopresti MP. “This will bring more jobs to our area and offer careers with training opportunities, helping the local economy to grow. An international outward looking company like Amazon will help us maximise the fantastic opportunities for our region after Brexit. I look forward to visiting the site in the future when it's operational to learn more about Amazon’s ambitions for Severn Beach area.”
Amazon is increasing the size of its UK fulfilment centre network to meet increasing customer demands, expand selection and enable small businesses selling on Amazon Marketplace to scale their operations.
The Bristol site will be fitted out with advanced Amazon Robotics technology. The robots slide under a tower of shelves where products are stowed, lift it and move it through the fulfilment centre. Find out more about Amazon Robotics here.
Stefano Perego added: “Bristol fulfilment centre will be equipped with Amazon Robotics technology, the latest example of our commitment to invention in logistics on behalf of our employees and our customers.
“The Amazon teams are dedicated to innovating in our fulfilment centres to increase efficiency of delivery while enabling greater selection at lower costs for our customers.”
Amazon has invested £6.4bn in the UK since 2010 in its UK-based research and development, head office and fulfilment and logistics infrastructure.
Amazon previously announced that it will open fulfilment centres in Dunstable, Doncaster, Tilbury and Warrington in 2017, creating more than 3,500 new permanent jobs. The Daventry site opened in February while Doncaster, Warrington and Tilbury will begin operations in the autumn.
Amazon currently has 13 fulfilment centres in the UK. As well as the recently opened Daventry site, there are two fulfilment centres in Doncaster and one each in Coalville (Leicestershire), Dunfermline, Dunstable, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay.
The 1,000 new jobs that will be created in Bristol from 2018 are in addition to the 5,000 new permanent roles that Amazon is creating this year, bringing its total workforce to 24,000 across its head office, three development centres as well as its fulfilment and customer service centres by the end of 2017.
