Amazon casts eye over Booker Longlist

06/09/2007

September 6, 2007, London: Whilst bookies favourite for The Booker ‘On Chesil Beach’ by Ian McEwan has been the bestseller on Amazon.co.uk since the announcement of the longlist, it is the performance of outsider ‘Mister Pip’ by Lloyd Jones that has caught the eye.

All 13 longlisted books benefited from strong uplifts in sales in the week following the announcement but ‘Mister Pip’ is the best performer amongst only a handful of books that have continued to see sales increases over the period since the longlist was published.

Sales of ‘Mister Pip’ have grown a further 26% on top of strong sales straight after the announcement. The only other books to see continued sales rises from the longlist were ‘Self Help’ by Edward Docx and ‘Animal’s People’ by Indra Sinha.

The other ten books have been unable to maintain their initial strong sales with ‘Consolation’ by Michael Redhill suffering a 74% decline in sales since the first week post announcement, leaving it bottom of the bestselling Booker longlisters chart.

The shortlist for this year's Man Booker Prize will be announced on 6th September, revealing the final set of authors who will compete for ownership of one of the nation's most prestigious literary awards.

Of the debut authors making their way onto the list this year, it is ‘The Gift of Rain’ that has seen the greatest sales since announcement of the longlist, recording the second highest sales behind favourite Ian McEwan.

“Sales performance on Amazon.co.uk is a good barometer of what the public believe to be the books that should be shortlisted,” commented Kes Nielsen, Head of Books Buying at Amazon.co.uk. “With the Booker, or any other award, sales go through the roof once the announcement is made but it is a real achievement to not only maintain those sales over the following weeks but further grow them in the manner that a book like ‘Mister Pip’ has. Much of this growth will be due to recommendations made by fellow purchasers of the book as well as friends and family. ‘Mister Pip’ could well be a dark horse for the shortlist and for the prize.”
